The Sacramento Black Nurses Association was founded in 1978 by nurses who felt the needs specific to the Black community were not being addressed. Of special concern were the areas of recruitment and retention of Blacks into nursing careers.

The Organization's Objectives are to:
- Provide nursing scholarships.
- Collaborate with others concerned about the health status of the community.
- Serve as healthcare advocates.
- Facilitate the professional growth of Black nurses.
